Mouthwashing age rating and content warnings

ESRB rated Mouthwashing Mature 17+. The descriptors are Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, and Strong Language. The story also contains sexual violence, pregnancy, self-harm, and alcohol. Those last four are from the plot, not from the ESRB descriptor line.

Sexual violence, self-harm, gore, and alcohol are discussed as warnings, not as scenes to copy.

What I saw

I split the rating sticker from the plot warnings on purpose. A parent who only reads “strong language” will miss why this game is a poor gift for a teenager. I am not going to describe the assault. The character pages name that it happens and who is harmed.

The ESRB line

Mature 17+. Descriptors: Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Strong Language. The rating summary in the research log mentions self-harm, psychological trauma, an axe, amputation, gunfire, a corpse, and strong language. The platforms named on the rating page were PS5 and Nintendo Switch, because those were the versions submitted. The PC game is the same content.

PEGI, USK, and other regional boards were not checked one by one. This page does not claim a worldwide rating.

Warnings that are not descriptors

Wikipedia and the character sources describe a sexual assault and a pregnancy, a suicide, and alcohol, including mouthwash used as drink. Those belong in a warning even though they are not the three ESRB descriptor names.

The official rating descriptors are a summary, not an exhaustive list of sensitive story themes. Read the warnings for sexual violence, pregnancy, suicide and alcohol alongside the ESRB entry.
