Mouthwashing’s best-known text is “TAKE RESPONSIBILITY”, the Chapter Four title that keeps flashing on screen. Below are eight short lines and notes, each placed by chapter using the community wiki’s summaries, with a one-line reading clearly marked as interpretation. The wording follows the wiki, not an official script.
What I saw
I copied these lines from the community wiki’s Chapters and character articles as saved on 28 Oct 2026; I did not re-check the wording against a playthrough.
“TAKE RESPONSIBILITY” and the screen text
“TAKE RESPONSIBILITY” — on-screen text and chapter title. It names Chapter Four and the three Bizzaro chapters. The wiki also records it flashing in the Chapter Twelve cargo hold and in Chapter Twenty, where it alternates with “KILLS NINETY NINE PERCENT” and “TAKE CARE OF IT”. A red note reading “RESPONSIBILITY.” waits at the end of a vent in Bizzaro Chapter One.
Interpretation: Chapter Twenty is the key placement. Jimmy says he will take care of it, and the screen answers with the phrase he is avoiding. Next to it, KILLS NINETY NINE PERCENT echoes the mouthwash’s germ-killing advertising, and the joke turns grim.
Before the crash
“They can’t expect me to perform miracles!!!” — Swansea’s note, handed to Curly by Anya in Chapter Three. Interpretation: the first sign that the crew is stretched thin long before anything goes wrong.
“Captain... I told you...” — Anya, Chapter Eighteen, when Curly asks who the father is. Interpretation: three words make the point that Curly had been warned about Jimmy and had not acted.
“I have to believe our worst moments don’t make us monsters, Jim.” — Anya, the header quote on the wiki’s Anya article; the snapshot does not tie it to a chapter. The wiki’s Curly article links this belief to Anya not holding a grudge against Curly. Interpretation: she offers Curly the grace that Jimmy later claims for himself.
After the crash
“A blind beast, aimless and restless/You can’t run from it.” — a note on the boxes in the Chapter Twelve cargo hold, during the blind-beast sequence. Interpretation: the beast is Polle-shaped, the note is addressed to whoever is walking, and that is Jimmy. The horse-maze walkthrough keeps the route separate from this reading.
“useless ray of goddamn sunshine” — Swansea to Daisuke in Chapter Nineteen, just before he ends Daisuke’s suffering with the axe. The wiki also quotes him calling Daisuke “a damn good kid [just] trying his best”. Interpretation: Swansea’s harshest-sounding line is the most affectionate thing anyone says to Daisuke.
The Bizzaro chapters
“We are home.” — Jimmy to a burning Curly in Bizzaro Chapter Two, after Curly says he wants to go home. Jimmy then calls what happened an accident. Interpretation: there is no going back to Earth for either of them, and Jimmy is still choosing the softer word.
“If all of that is true... Why are you still so concerned with him?” — Polle in Bizzaro Chapter Three, cutting Jimmy off as he promises to take responsibility. Interpretation: the mascot asks the question the game has been building to, and Jimmy’s answer is the final chapter.
How these lines were checked
Each quote is fifteen words or fewer of the wording in the community wiki’s saved articles, and each chapter number comes from the wiki’s Chapters article. Where the wiki adds bracketed words or italics, this page keeps the brackets and drops the italics. Lines the wiki only paraphrases, such as most of Jimmy’s final monologue, are not quoted here.
The readings are mine and other players’ interpretations. The developers have explained some images, such as the mouth at the end, but not every line. The symbolism page keeps the same split between what is on screen and what it might mean.
